Object Reference Not Set error when retrieving data in WizMag for QuickBooks

clock February 3, 2011 23:14 by author Administrator

Q) When I retrieve data in WizMag for QuikcBooks, I get the following error message:

"Object Reference not set to an instance of an object."

What is happening and what can I do to correct it?

A) This error occurs when the "Allow access to SSN/other personal Information" is not checked when the QuickBooks Application Certificate is displayed.  When WizMag first accesses the company, QuickBooks will display an application certificate requesting permission for WizMag to access your company data.  An example screenshot of this is shown below.  The items marked in red should be selected.

QB Application Certificate

If the last option listed on the above window (Allow this application to access personal data such as Social Security Numbers and customer credit card information) is not checked, the Object reference not set to an instance of an object error will appear.  To correct this:

  • In QuickBooks, open the company and click Edit-Preferences.
  • From the Preferences window, click Integrated Applications from the list on the left side, then click on the Company Preferences tab on the top.  It will show a list of applications that have attempted to connect to your company.
  • Select WizMag E W-2 2010 from the list of applications and click Properties.  The Properties window for WizMag will appear as shown below:

QB WizMag Properties

  • The two checkboxes highlighted in red should be checked.  Once they are checked, click OK to save your changes.
  • Click OK on the Preferences window to close the window.
  • In WizMag, attempt to update data.

How do I make a CSV file for Georgia's form G-1003?

clock February 2, 2011 01:04 by author Administrator

The easiest way to do this is to open up Excel and enter the following values in the first row:

  • Column A (Tax Period End) - this will be December 31, 2010 entered in the following format: 2010-12-31
  • Column B (Software ID) - This is the software product used to make the report file.  Enter 0 if you do not want to specify what made the file "Excel" without quotes.
  • Column C (Software Version) - This is the version of the software product used to make the report file.  Enter 0 if you do not want to specify the version or click Help-About in your software and enter the version number from that window.
  • Column D (Amended Return Indicator) - Enter 0 if this an amended return or 1 if it is not.  For WizMag enter 0.
  • Column E (TIN) - Enter the company's FEIN without dashes.  An example would be if your company FEIN is 11-2211223 then enter 112211223.
  • Column F (State EIN) - Enter the company's Withholding ID without dashes.
  • Column G (Due Date) - Enter the due date of the W-2 report.  This will be February 28, 2011 and will be entered in the following format: 2011-02-28.
  • Column H (Tax Year) - Enter 2010.
  • Column I (No GA Tax) - Enter 0 if your company withholds state tax, 1 if you are a domestic employer and do not withhold state taxes.
  • Column J (Number of Forms) - Enter the number of W-2 forms being reported.
  • Column K (GA Taxable Wages) - Enter the total taxable wages being reported.  Two (2) digits must be shown after the decimal point. Example: 50.7 would not be correct but 50.70 would be correct.
  • Column L (GA Tax Withheld) - Enter the total taxes withheld being reported.  Two (2) digits must be shown after the decimal point. Example: 50.7 would not be correct but 50.70 would be correct.

Once the data is entered, click File, then Save As.  Specify the location and the file name and change the type to CSV.  A couple of dialogs will appear telling you that the CSV format can't store all of the features in Excel.  Click OK/Yes to continue.  Please note if you decide to open this file after closing Excel, it will format the dates incorrectly and make some fields too small to display the contents without widening the field.  Until the column is widened, it will show number signs (######).

When uploading the file you will choose G-1003 CSV as the file type, then locate the file made in the steps listed above as the file to upload.

How do I specify another company if the wrong one was specified?

clock February 20, 2010 00:49 by author Administrator

Q) When adding a company to the program, the wrong company was specified.  How do I change it to the correct one?

A) To change the company path, go to Tasks, then either Change Company Path or Administrative Tasks-Change Company Path.

Depending on the accounting software being used, you will need to do the following:

QuickBooks Users:

  1. Specify the location of the company file.
  2. The program will pull the company name and address from the company data and display it.
  3. Edit the information if needed and click OK.  You will be asked to confirm the information.
  4. If the file name is different from the previously selected file name you will be notified and asked to confirm your choice.
  5. Close and restart the WizMag software.

Peachtree Users:

  1. Click the Browse button (will be labeled with Browser or '...') and locate the datapath for the company.  This is the path of the company without the company folder.  As an example, if your company is located at P:\Company\YourCompany then you will select P:\Company.
  2. WizMag will then go through each folder inside of the selected path and display any companies that it finds.
  3. Choose the desired company from the list.  When a company is selected the folder it is stored in will be displayed under the list of companies.
  4. Click OK.
  5. The program will pull the company name and address from the company data and display it.
  6. Edit the information if needed and click OK.  You will be asked to confirm the information.
  7. If the file name is different from the previously selected file name you will be notified and asked to confirm your choice.
  8. Close and restart the WizMag software.

Wrong accounting package showing when running WizMag W-2

clock February 19, 2010 00:24 by author Administrator

Q) I use Peachtree accounting software, and installed WizMag W-2 2009.  When I try to add a company, it wants me to specify a QuickBooks company path.  I'm not running QuickBooks. How do I get WizMag to recognize that I am running Peachtree?

A) When installing WizMag, one of the steps is to specify which accounting package to use: QuickBooks or PeachtreeQuickBooks is the default choice on this step.

If QuickBooks was specified and you use Peachtree, you will need to close WizMag and open Control Panel in Windows.  From there go to Add/Remove Programs (2000/XP) or Remove a Program (Vista/7) and remove WizMag E W-2 2009.  After the program has been removed, reinstall WizMag W-2, making sure to choose Peachtree.

Wrong tax year amounts showing in WizMag 1099

clock February 18, 2010 23:48 by author Administrator

Q) When I process vendors in WizMg 1099, the numbers that show on the report are for 2008, not 2009.  How do I fix this?

A) WizMag 1099 pulls vendors from the text file created when printing our custom 1099-MISC report.  When printing this report Peachtree gives you the option of selecting a tax year.  If 2008 is specified when the text file is created, tax year 2008 amounts will be in the file.

To correct this, perform the following:

  1. Select the Reports & Forms menu in Peachtree, then Forms, then Tax Forms.
  2. If you do not see a form called Form 1099-MISC Wizard TY2009, then perform the following tasks and go back to step 1:
    1. Close the Select a Report or Form window in Peachtree
    2. Open WizMag 1099-MISC 2009.
    3. From the Guide click Copy Custom Report to add the custom 1099 report to Peachtree.
  3. Click the Preview and Print button on the lower-right.
  4. From the Preview and Print 1099 Forms window, choose a tax year of 2009.
  5. Click Print/Email.
  6. Select the Generic/Text Only printer and click OK.  You will be asked to specify a location for the file.  This will create a file with tax year 2009 amounts.
  7. Once the file has been made it will ask you to print a 1096 form.  Click Cancel to return to Peachtree.
  8. Minimize or close Peachtree and go to WizMag.
  9. From the Guide select Retrieve Information or select the Tasks menu and Update.
  10. Click Locate to specify the location of the file created in step 6.
  11. Click Update to retrieve information from the file and from Peachtree.

From here you will have tax year 2009 amounts in WizMag.
